Workshops

20160404-DSCF0320-HDR

I have over 30 years of experience as a photographer covering a wide range of genres and I offer photography workshops for small groups or on a 1-2-1 basis.

Introduction to Photography

If you are not getting the best from your DSLR or Mirrorless camera then I can explain your camera controls and introduce you to the basic principles of photography of exposure, aperture, shutter speed and ISO.  We can look at how to use these creatively and the effect they have with demonstration and hands-on practical exercises.

  • Understanding Your Camera: Focusing, modes, white balance, metering, raw and jpeg
  • Understanding Exposure: ISO, aperture, shutter speed
  • Creative camera control: Shutter speed, aperture
  • Understanding Lenses: Wide angle, standard and telephoto, zoom v prime, choosing the right lens, using lenses for effect
  • Introduction to Composition: What to include or exclude, backgrounds, contrast, what is pleasing, angles

*A DSLR (digital single lens reflex), Mirrorless or CSC (compact system camera) will be required.

Portrait Lighting

Small group workshops at my studio in Thornton-Cleveleys near Blackpool with the aim of teaching how I go about lighting for portraits.  Covering aspects such as:

  • Metering
  • Hard and soft light
  • Contrast
  • Lighting modifiers
  • Single and multiple lights
  • Controlling window light

1-2-1 Tailored Tuition

A more tailored experience for individuals, customised for your specific needs and requirements.  We would have conversations prior to the sessions to establish where you are with your photography, what you are looking to achieve, whether it’s suitable for you and for us to agree what I can offer and how it’s delivered.  Several short sessions with time to consolidate learning in between may be preferable to one longer session. Also included would be online support after the event to make sure you’re able to put things into practice.

Sessions at my studio are charged by the hour, with discounts for multiple session, half or full day bookings.

Introduction to Black and White Film Photography

During this workshop we will explore film photography using Ilford HP5Plus 400ISO black and white film in 35mm, 120 medium format and 5×4 large format.  You won’t need a film camera of your own to attend, I have several we can use but if you do own one then of course you’re welcome to bring it along.

Once the films have been shot we’ll head into the darkroom and look at loading various film types into developing tanks, mixing chemicals and processing.

One roll each of 35mm and 120 Ilford HP5Plus film is included for each delegate, plus one 5×4 sheet of Ilford HP5Plus subject to demand.  All processing chemicals necessary for the workshop are included.

Introduction to Alternative Processes

We’ll have a look at two of the processes from the Victorian era, salt printing and cyanotypes and look at photograms and photographic printing.  Beginning by mixing the raw powdered chemicals to create the sensitisers, through to application on the paper, contact printing and development, this workshop covers every stage required to make finished, one-off prints.

All materials will be provided for delegates to make four prints, two of each type.  Prior to the event I’ll need to receive four digital files for me to print as digital negatives.
